DUNLOP 228

TYPE DESIGN. PACKAGING DESIGN. PRINT DESIGN.

Dunlop 228 was designed for my senior capstone project at Auburn University. The project is a three month long self-guided assignment. I framed my senior project around my personal goals and interests I hoped to explore before graduation. This type design allows me to revisit an old design exercise with new knowledge and understanding of graphic design. As a design student, I have always enjoyed working with type and was eager to gain an understanding in designing type. My approach to this project allowed me to bring my education full-circle. As a student, I hoped to demonstrate to my faculty and peers the importance of foundations design projects to upper-level design courses.

Dunlop 228 is a modular, display face inspired by an introductory Foundation Design exercise. The modular system is comprised of four basic shapes: a circle, semi-circle, square and rectangle. With these modules stemmed a typeface that utilizes key principles and elements of design: balance, contrast, repetition (of shape) and sensitivity to space. Primarily intended for use as display, Dunlop 228 is best when used creatively where its untraditional appearance can overtake legibility in an exciting and unexpected manner. Dunlop 228 is designed with the hope to inspire others to explore the creative possibilities in design.
